In January of 2000, Gary was invited by world-renowned neurosurgeon Dr. C. Norman Shealy to participate in research at The Shealy Wellness Center in Springfield, Missouri. Dr. Shealy is the founder and CEO of the Shealy Wellness Center, President of Holos Institutes of Health, and author of Sacred Healing: The Curing Power of Energy and Spirituality. Dr. Shealy measured how Gary affected the physiology of the patients' brains using electroencephalogram (EEG) technology that mapped three brain waves - alpha, theta and beta. Later, Gary himself was also hooked up to an EEG machine to see what changes occur in his own brain while performing a healing. The purpose of this research is to show the unequivocal influence of a healer's energy on the brain physiology of a patient. In these experiments, Gary worked with four patients whose ailments ranged from chronic fatigue, chronic pain and age-related infirmities. The patients were hooked up to EEGs and Gary was not allowed to touch the patient so as not to disturb the reading. The patient laid still, with eyes masked and ears plugged to prevent being distracted by noise and images. After the patient rested for ten minutes, Gary performed a healing for 25 minutes, and then the patient remained at rest for an additional ten minutes. The results of these experiments are listed below in the form of "brain maps" showing the changes occurring in the patient's brains. The first set of maps you see shows the baseline: a snapshot of the patients' brain at rest before the healing. The second set shows the patient's brain during the healing mode. The third set of maps shows the patient's brain during the ten-minute period following the healing. The first column shows theta waves (4-7 pulsations per second); the second column shows alpha waves (8-12 pulsations per second), and the third column shows beta waves (13-26 pulsations per second). The color bar at left shows the representation of minimum activity (black/purple) to maximum activity (pink/white). In trying to interpret these maps, compare the absolute ("ABS") values in the top row of the baseline reading to the absolute values in the healing mode and post-healing mode, and the relative ("REL") values in the bottom row of the baseline reading to the relative values in the healing mode and post-healing mode. For example, Patient 1's EEG shows a change from baseline to healing mode, particularly in the theta wave relative position (first column bottom). The amount of activity, or change in frequency, is represented by the change in color from blue to deep green. Then compare the healing mode to the post-healing mode, where the amount of activity is maintained. In the beta wave relative position (third column bottom), again there is a change in frequency during the healing represented by the presence of the dark blue.   Patient 1Baseline
Healing Mode
Post
INTERPRETATIONThe baseline shows a fairly intense theta and beta activity throughout much of the brain except for the right mid-temporal area. During healing, there is a distinct change in the pattern of the frequency.
  Patient 2Baseline
Healing Mode
Post
INTERPRETATIONThere is a marked asymmetry in the baseline of this brain map with a focus of high activity in the left mid-temporal area. During the healing component, there is a modest increase in mid-range intensity throughout the frontoparietal, and to some extent the occipital area bilaterally. There is a definite change.
